“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls; Where words come out from the depths of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit; Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.”
As we watch the sky light up with our tri-colour it reminds us of our glorious freedom through which pours the sunshine of the human dignity and human spirit. The aforementioned poem was penned by the great Indian poet, visionary and nationalist Rabindranath Tagore who wanted the nation to awaken to the glowing dawn of freedom.
This year, India is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day to mark the complete independence that was achieved due to the collective contribution of brave freedom fighters. From Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel to Subhash Chandra Bose, from Sardar Bhagat Singh and beyond, reawakened the hopes and ambitions to gain freedom for that was once just a distant dream.
It took 3 years for the harbingers of freedom to contemplate on every Article, every word and every phrase to creating our constitution on behalf of the citizen of this nation. The chairman of the drafting committee Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar drafted the final draft of the constitution that was destined to become a beacon of guiding light for our nation aiming to preserve unity amid diversity. It was passed declaring Purna Swaraj was an iconic milestone in strengthening the spirit of India. Today the spirit of our nation stands tall on the pillars of our constitution encompassing Democracy, Liberty, Fraternity, Equality, Justice and beyond.
It is palpable to us that in the wake of the pandemic, humanity is struggling to find a ray of hope. Amidst this, India emerged as a comrade for many developing and even developed nations who were struggling to fight the perils of a pandemic. From sending vaccinations and other medical resources to ensuring timely food supply, our nation did strive to do its best in times of need. At times, it feels as if the entire world is in awe of the unmatched resilience and determination of this nation to battle with this invisible foe despite being a heavily populated nation. Moreover, the way we have strengthened our health infrastructure in minimal time to keep the murkiness of pandemics at bay is truly commendable.
How can we not be grateful towards frontline warriors of the nation who continue to cooperate with the policy-makers, leaders, entrepreneurs and administrators at the state and central level to keep pandemic woes at bay? Isn’t this is a testimony in itself that we as a nation have emerged stronger than ever as “One Single Family”?
At one side we take immense pride in our latest defence self-reliance in the form of “IAC Vikrant”, naval supremacy built by ingenious teams of the Cochin Shipyard and Indian Navy and at the same time, we rejoice in the incredible village transformations. Sui village from Bhiwani district in Haryana is one recent shinning exemplary wherein a few enlightened citizens joined hands to transform the village under the ‘Swa-Prerit Adarsh Gram Yojana’.
Now is the time to think about how we can contribute to the growth of our nation and even if it starts by doing something for your birthplace, it is truly worth it. There are myriad ways to contribute to the growth of the nation and there are myriad shades of patriotism and one of them is to perform our duty well.
It is also a time to take pride in the fact that daughters of our nation continue to smash glass-ceiling to claim what they deserve besides carving an identity for themselves in the Armed Forces. Now is also the time to adopt urgent actions to combat climate change and it can all start by discarding the single-use plastic and avoiding the use of polythene in a day to day life. Another most effective way to combat climate change is to thrust aside fast fashion by turning to authentic brands like “Aachho” who are disrupting ethnic fashion for all good reasons by offering limitless ethnic choices for women belonging to all age groups. Sustainable brands like Aachho have truly emerged as a raison d’être to compel the next generation to reconnect with our glorious roots while reviving the quintessence of Indian craftsmanship and contributing to the upliftment of the lives of weavers and artisans.
Last but not the least; it is time to recall the immortal sacrifices of countless brave soldiers who laid down their valuable lives to protect the freedom of our country. Also, let’s not forget to remember the sacrifice of their families for the country.
“I feel that the constitution is workable, it is flexible and it is strong enough to hold the country together both in peacetime and in wartime. Indeed, if I may say so, if things go wrong under the new Constitution, the reason will not be that we had a bad Constitution. What we will have to say is that Man was vile.”
B.R. Ambedkar
